Frequently Asked Questions About Exercise Science
A personal trainer holds a certificate-level qualification and focuses on fitness and general health goals. An Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) has a university degree and applies scientific principles to design evidence-based exercise programs, often targeting chronic conditions, rehabilitation, and specific health outcomes beyond fitness.
You should see an Accredited Exercise Scientists when you need an outcome and result from undertaking a specific exercise program, or when you have a medical condition or injury that calls for a specialist health care and professional exercise advice.
An Exercise Science Initial Assessment at Fortify Movement & Health will include a thorough discussion about your goals, medical history, previous and current injuries, health conditions and treatment based on your medication. We will also conduct an AxIT strength and movement assessment to provide a clinical postural and analysis of your body to assess risk management and improve your everyday life.
This full assessment information is important in order to prescribe an individual exercise program that’s tailored and designed for your body. Then, with your accredited exercise scientist, your goals are discussed and a treatment plan is designed and developed for you. Then, depending on your exercise conditioning needs, you’ll begin an individual exercise program.
From your initial assessment, you’ll have a clear management plan for your clinical condition. And you’ll be supported in a professional manner and care is taken to achieve your goals. Your Altona exercise physiologist will also collaborate with any other treating and allied health practitioners to ensure each member of your healthcare team is collaborating and working towards the same health goals.
Whilst our personal trainers don’t accept referrals, our exercise physiologist can. They work with patient referrals from GP’s, specialists, hospitals, medicare TAC, DVA and WorkCover patients. Self-appointed referrals are also welcome. We work with all allied health and collaborate as a team to make sure you get the best training and exercise treatment possible.
Your 1-1 sessions are based on your initial assessment results. Your exercise scientist will tailor and base each session around an exercise program, working towards your goals and outcome, progressing at each exercise session.
Your private session allows dedicated time with our Exercise Scientist, who’ll guide and help you to develop good exercise technique and understanding.
